Whether you're a seasoned photographer or a hobbyist, shooting seascapes can be a challenging genre to capture. However, it can also be incredibly rewarding when you capture an image that you're proud of. In today's blog, I will take you through the steps that I take when shooting intricate seascapes with my 100-400mm lens. I hope you all enjoy!

  • Getting Acquainted with the Sigma 100-400mm The first thing you want to do is to ensure that you know your equipment and its capabilities. As mentioned, I will be using the Sigma 100-400mm lens. This allows me to simplify my compositions and focus precisely on what I want to shoot. The ocean can be daunting, so this lens provides a good starting point for crafting a composition.

  • Finding Inspiration in Nature Before diving into photography, I allowed myself to be fully present in the moment, soaking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the ocean. By immersing myself in the natural beauty of the Oregon coast, I tend to find inspiration for my photography.

  • Mastering Composition When composing seascapes, simplicity is key. With the Sigma 100-400mm lens, I experimented with different angles and perspectives to find the perfect composition. I focused on framing the ocean, coastline, and sky in a way that felt balanced and visually engaging.

  • Capturing Dynamic Moments The Oregon coast is a dynamic and ever-changing environment, with waves crashing against the rocky shoreline and clouds drifting across the sky. To capture these fleeting moments, I adjusted my settings and experimented with different focal lengths and shutter speeds. By freezing the motion of the waves or capturing the soft movement of the waves, I was able to convey the energy and dramatic nature of the water.

  • Enhancing Images with Filters To elevate my seascapes to the next level, I made use of filters such as polarizers and neutral density filters. These tools allowed me to control reflections, reduce glare, and enhance the mood of my photos. By experimenting with different filter combinations, I was able to create images that truly captured the essence of the Oregon coast.
