This Button Will CHANGE Your Photography FOREVERšŸ”˜

Updated: Jun 28, 2024

Today, I want to dive into a feature of Sony cameras that can significantly enhance your shooting experience: custom buttons. Sony cameras are known for their flexibility, and the ability to customize buttons is a powerful tool that can make your photography workflow more efficient and intuitive. While the best setup depends on your personal needs and shooting style, I'll share some insights and tips on how to get the most out of your custom buttons, including the invaluable back button focus.

Why Customize Your Buttons?

Customizing your camera buttons allows you to tailor the camera to your specific shooting style, making it easier to access frequently used settings and features. This can save you time, prevent missed shots, and help you focus more on composing and capturing your images rather than fumbling through menus.

How to Customize Your Buttons

  1. Access the Custom Button Menu:

  • Turn on your Sony camera and press the ā€˜Menu’ button.

  • Navigate to the ā€˜Custom Key’ settings. This is usually found under the ā€˜Camera Settings’ tab or the ā€˜Gear’ icon, depending on your camera model.

  1. Assign Functions to Buttons:

  • You will see a diagram of your camera with various buttons labeled (C1, C2, AEL, etc.).

  • Select a button you want to customize and choose from a list of available functions. The functions available for assignment are extensive, including things like Eye AF, ISO adjustment, and much more.

Recommended Custom Button Setup

While everyone’s needs will vary, here are a few custom button configurations that many photographers, including myself, find useful:

  1. Back Button Focus:

  • One of the most popular customizations is assigning the AF-ON button (or another convenient button) to control autofocus independently of the shutter button. This allows you to focus once and recompose without having to refocus.

  • To set this up, go to the Custom Key menu, select the desired button (like AEL or AF-ON), and assign it to ā€˜AF/MF Control Hold’ or ā€˜AF On.’

  1. ISO Adjustment:

  • Quickly changing ISO settings is crucial in varying light conditions. Assign one of the custom buttons to ISO adjustment for fast access.

  • Choose a button, such as C1 or C2, and assign it to ā€˜ISO.’

  1. Eye AF:

  • Eye autofocus is a fantastic feature for portrait photography. Assigning this to a custom button allows for quick engagement.

  • Assign ā€˜Eye AF’ to a button that is easy to reach, like the center button of the control wheel.

  1. Focus Area Selection:

  • Changing the focus area mode frequently can be streamlined by assigning it to a custom button.

  • Assign ā€˜Focus Area’ to a button like C3 or another that feels natural to you.

Tips for Effective Customization

  • Consider Your Shooting Style: Think about what features you use most often and assign those to easily accessible buttons.

  • Test and Adjust: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different configurations. What works best for you might change as you get more comfortable with your camera.

  • Remember Ergonomics: Make sure that the custom buttons you assign are comfortable to press and won’t disrupt your shooting flow.

Customizing the buttons on your Sony camera can drastically improve your shooting efficiency and make your photography experience much more enjoyable. While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, starting with essential functions like back button focus, ISO adjustment, Eye AF, and focus area selection can set you on the right path. Take some time to experiment with different setups to find what works best for you. Happy shooting!
